Yui-san's Game Reviews (YGR): Test Drive Unlimited 2 (PS3)

I finally got a chance to play the long awaited racing game "Test Drive Unlimited 2", or TDU2. It had promise, but the final product didn't come together.

Presentation

I thought Gran Turismo 5 was bad. But I guess I was wrong. Everything, from glitches to an awful storyline... TDU2 is more incomplete than GT5. It's actually unforgiveable (unlike GT5). Characters look lifeless, and the amount of bugs that appears even after the patch (From invisible cars to sinking traffic to bouncing signs... it's visually a mess, aside from its mind-blowing graphics. Online gameplay, the main focus of the game, is messed up as well. From lags to other problems, the list goes on and on....

Graphics
Most cars looks decent (aside from some badly modelled cars, such as the Enzo), with fully detailed interiors. Of course, it's not playing the jaw-dropping details/graphics game as Gran Turismo did, but it's still very detailed. It, however, still has rough edges, even when viewing in full HD. The avatars/characters, on the other hand, is a catastrophe... repetitive looks and peculiar clothes makes it a horrible aspect of the game... Also, the scale of the islands are more breathtaking than the actual details inside. Not much sights to see.

Sound

What else can I say? Repetitive voice acting, annoying road gravel effects, meaningless (and repetitive) radio commercials... I can't get through the game without a headache. Also, the lack of music selection, with only 2 radio stations, can be quite a dissappointing thing. Car/Engine sounds are okay, but alongside GT5, lacks power.

Gameplay

Incredible, ambitious ideas fuel Test Drive Unlimited 2. Rolling around and taking in the sites is fun. But with its bizzare driving physics, I think I'm beginning to become suicital. I tried to acommodate on one of their 3 pre-set driving setting, but I found myself smashing the contorler every now and then. Sometimes, the car is unresponsive, and won't even turn properly. Other times, the car feels as if driving on ice (NO, it was not raining). I oversteer and understeer more than I get to properly turn the car. I must say, this is the ONLY racing game up to date that I haven't been able to properly get used to.
And then comes the AI. Easy AI isn't the oly problem here. Not only do these "Top drivers" drive horribly, but they drive recklessly as well. I had Miami Harris do the PIT manuver three times in a race; Tess Wintory brake right in front of me, causing me to stop; and the Wilder Brothers drive in the wrong way and ramming into me, head on. What did I do wrong? Did I offend them somehow? It might be fun at the beginning, thinking "wow, the AI is great!". But it really annoyed me to death after various races.
One thing I can't complain about, though, is the amount of events. Hundreds of races + uncountable amounts of side missions will leave you playing for months. And the online features (although they are a bit buggy at the moment) also provide you with various ways to play with your friends, from creating clubs to visiting your friends' houses.

Final Thoughts

TDU2 is, a game with ideas beyond great, but its producer did not fulfill their promise. TDU2, therefore, fails to stand out on any aspect, aside from the freedom of personalizing your life, which, unfortunately, isn't an important part of a racing game... If Atari/Eden Games manage to fix the driving physics and online game play, then this would be one incredible game.

If you can get through all of the negatives of TDU2, then you're going to have a blast playing TDU2. But to the most of you that can't....its still an acceptable game.... but if you already have Sims, pick up TDU1 instead. Less bugs, nearly same graphics, and more cars to select from... TDU2 loses in every aspect. Worst of all, it's lost the core elements of a racing game: the physics. Recommened? Only to those of you who like  games that give you control of your character's life (see: buying houses, decorating, pimping sweet rides). But for racing fans, TDU1 (with mods) is a better choice. ;)

  1. i think that you are wrong tdu2 cant be compared with gt5 anyway gt5 is meant to be a driving simulator wich is meant to be realistic and in someways boring and lack of storyline but tdu2 has a storline and some characters wich makes it different tdu2 is a cross between the sims and nfs hot pursuit even do the chase mode is crapy but i think you wont fin anything neer to tdu2 it is uncompareable

  2. @anonymous: Yes! I agree with you, but I was just using GT5 as a comparison to TDU2 since both games were "Incomplete" (as fans say) at the time of release. I did not intend to compare the overall gameplay, as, like you mentioned, is completely different.
