HSNU nearly breaks world record

More than 10,000 alumni of the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, led by Premier Sean Chen (陳冲), joined together in singing the school’s anthem yesterday in a bid to set a world record at the school’s 65th anniversary celebration.
The school was looking to break a Guinness World Record that was set in January when 15,243 people in India sang a national/regional anthem simultaneously.
All participants received a commemorative bookmark with a barcode, which was scanned as they entered the campus to track the number of people present, said Lee Chi-lung (李啟龍), a director of the school.
Videos of yesterday’s event will be immediately submitted to the Guinness World Records organization for evaluation, he said, but he did not divulge the exact number of participants who sang the anthem simultaneously.
The school, established in 1947, is one of the few prestigious public high schools in the country that is coeducational.
Apart from the premier, alumni participating in the event included Central Election Commission Chairwoman Chang Po-ya (張博雅), former Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄) and entertainers Na Dou (納豆) and Serina Liu (劉真).
Chen, who graduated from the school 45 years ago, said he was proud to still be a part of the school’s tradition.
He added that singing the school anthem by its alumni had become a staple of school reunions.
