2017世大運 台北獲選 Taipei to host 2017 World University Games

歷經兩年的準備,台北市在台北時間今天凌晨獲選舉辦2017年夏季世界大學運動會,擊敗強勁對手巴西利亞(Brasilia)。這將是台灣有史以來主辦最大的國際運動賽事!!!

We've done it!!! Taipei is now hosting the 2017 Summer Universiade! This will be Taiwan's biggest international sporting event hosted to date!

Taipei City Mayor Hao Lung-bin (center), and Claude-LouisGallien (right), President of FISU (International University Sports Federation)
Taipei Mayor Hao Lung-bin (郝龍斌), arrived in Belgium on Saturday to coordinate the bid and thanked the International University Sports Federation (FISU) for choosing Taipei as the host city and said obtaining the hosting rights showed the city’s capability to host international activities.

“There’s an old saying: ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way.’ This is the fifth time we’ve taken part in the bidding, and finally we made it,” Hao said in accepting the certificate from the Games committee in Belgium. “Taipei City will work with the FISU closely and make the Summer Universiade in 2017 an exciting and passionate Games.”

Taipei celebrates, while Brasilia remains silent. Didn't think we could win, did you?

Who would've thought that they'd actually pick us this time around! Apparently the Chinese (PRC, that is) were supporting Taipei's bid...rather strange since they usually detest the idea of Taiwan hosting large international events, so I guess we should be thankful.

The Taipei Dome, currently under construction (after several delays). This will be the main venue for the games.

As a citizen of Taipei myself, I'm thoroughly excited about our success to attain the rights to host the Universiade; not only does it boost our country's recognition on the international stage, but Taipei will surely see a great amount of improvements in the comings years as the city readies itself for the event. Can't wait to see what the future holds for Taipei! And of course, can't wait for 2017!
